Ping-Pong Ball Sweetness

In one of our earliest conversations, my boyfriend and I talked about what superpower each of us would most like to have. (No, I do not imagine superpowers appear on most lists of questions to ask a potential date, but it sure was fun!)

He chose super speed, a lá Dash on The Incredibles.  I chose the ability to throw a ping-pong ball from wherever I am and hit anyone in the world, wherever they are (with an impact speed as if I’d thrown it from across the room). It would be very handy, I explained, as a way to send brief messages. It would not actually hurt anyone, though they would not necessarily know where it came from. It could communicate annoyance or affection depending on context. I could use it get people’s attention or simply to pester my younger brothers who live in different towns. Naturally, I was serious, having given it a great deal of consideration, and he thought it was hilarious.

A couple months later, he brought me a present when he came to visit. Inside a green gift bag (my favorite color) and tissue paper, I found a package holding three ping-pong balls. I was so happy with the ping-pong balls, I did not notice the package had spaces for six until he pointed it out. He explained he put one in his apartment, one in his car, and one in his office at work “to remind me of you… Not that I really need a reminder. And since you already have my attention, you can use these for someone else.”

Now there are two ping-pong balls in my living room and one on my desk at work. I smile every time I see them.

Update: Read the next ping-pong chapter here.

Lows & Highs: March 6-12

Last night, I could not think of a low from the past week. I even scrolled back through my schedule but nothing came to mind. My high for the week was visiting Great Bend over the weekend. It was a terrific  weekend full of quality time that involved yummy food, long conversations, relaxing walks, and a funny play (Lil’ Abner).

Lows & Highs: February 27-March 5

On Monday nights, I lead a small Bible study for college students. As an icebreaker, we used to play a short game (which varied from week to week) at the beginning of each meeting. A couple years ago, I introduced the group to “lows and highs,” where everyone takes a turn sharing a lowlight – something they didn’t like – from the past seven days and then a highlight point – something they liked.* You have to start with low and end with high so you end on a happy note.

I like this way of opening our meetings because it lets each person share what has been noteworthy in their life lately and hear from each other. I like that its flexible structure gives us an opportunity to practice good conversation skills of listening, responding, and general turn-taking. (Carrying on a good conversation seems to be a dying art.) The students seem to like the way “lows and highs” lets them tell others about frustrations, problems, triumphs, and joys without complaining or bragging. It gives them a chance be heard on whatever matters to them this week.

Last night, the only low I could think of was that last week was our fiscal month-end at work, when I work longer hours to wrap up the budgets and forecasts for accounting period. Even then, the work went smoothly and I finished earlier than usual. My first high was the murder mystery party I had with some work friends on Friday (everyone wearing tropical costume, acting like silly characters, eating yummy food.) My second high (yes, we are allowed to have more than one!) was when one of the engineers at the party thought that I could not possibly be older than 27.

What are your lows and highs for this week?

*I got this idea from dear friends who share lows and highs at dinner each night with their three children and any guests who happen to be there. The idea to write about it came from a friend who did the same thing here.

1-2-3 Quiet Time

A couple years ago, my dad was having a weekly Bible study with Justin* who dislikes reading books and had the impression that quiet time required lots of reading. Dad sympathized because he is not a lover of reading and writing either. He prayed for a simple, practical way that Justin could study the Bible and have quiet time. He came up with three steps: Read, Rewrite, Respond.

1. Read a verse.**

2. Rewrite the verse as if God is speaking personally to you (because He is).

3. Respond to what God is saying.

As an example, here is one I did earlier this month:

1. Read 1 Corinthians 1:19-20

For Jesus Christ, the Son of God, does not waver between “Yes” and “No.” He is the one whom Silas, Timothy, and I preached to you, and as God’s ultimate “Yes,” he always does what he says. For all of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding “Yes!” And through Christ, our “Amen” (which means “Yes”) ascends to God for his glory.

2. Rewrite

Abby, I am never indecisive or hesitant. I do everything I say. I said “yes” to you, to our relationship, and I’ll never change my mind.

3. Respond

Jesus, You chose me and made me Yours. Now I share Your undaunted Spirit; help me act like it. I want to trust You instead of worrying.

You do not have to write as much as I did or you can write more. You do not have to use the whole verse or verses but you can if you want. What I like about this 1-2-3 method is that it is easy to remember and adjusts to fit each person.

*Of course that isn’t his real name.

**If you do not know where to start, try the verse that follows the last one you read or one that was mentioned in the last sermon or Bible study you attended. If neither of those suggestions work for you, start with 1 John.
