Homemade Coffee Flavoring Syrup Gift Set

I like my coffee dark and sweet, preferably with a flavor. As I have written before, I like to experiment with making my own flavoring syrups. Since I have accumulated several favorite recipes, I suggested to Brian that we make our own gift sets for family members we would see for Christmas. Although many of them do not drink coffee, the syrups are also good in tea, hot chocolate, cider, and steamers (hot milk with a flavor add-in).

Holiday Flavors

I posted the recipe for Cinnamon Stick Syrup a while ago and found the Gingerbread Syrup recipe on AllRecipes. I invented the Candy Cane Syrup recipe, which uses actual candy canes. I much prefer this recipe to peppermint syrups I tried using peppermint oil or peppermint leaves.

Candy Cane Flavoring Syrup

Combine the following ingredients and bring to a boil over medium high heat, stirring occasionally:
3 cups water
12 candy canes
2 1/4 cups sugar
Boil for 5 min, then reduce heat to medium low and simmer 5 more minutes. Remove from heat and cool.

Making Gift Sets

I bought two-ounce, food-quality bottles* that came with lids and shrink wrap sleeves, filled them with syrups, and made labels from a template I found via Pinterest. Ironically, the shrink wrap was commented on almost more than the actual syrups!

Future Syrup Flavors

I will be developing and sharing more syrups in the future. I already have marshmallow and sweet almond ones, and am considering praline next. Leave me a comment if you have suggestions for my next flavor project!
